Kapi'olani homeless will have to find new digs beginning today

Nighttime closures of Kapi'olani Park and Kuhio Beach start today as part of a city campaign to spruce up Waikiki and to discourage overnight camping.

But the homeless who remained there last week said they didn't plan to leave. They'll just move.

"It's harassment," said Misty Martin, who said she has slept in the park for two years. "The homeless are a target. It's just not fair. We're among the working homeless. We just don't have enough to make the rent and all. Now we'll just have to adapt."

Despite more than a month's notice of the impending closure, tents and about two dozen campers were still in the park on Friday. Barbecues, tents, belongings covered in tarps, chairs and bicycles were clustered in little camp areas.

The number of homeless in the park last week was significantly lower than over the summer, when camping peaked at an estimated 150 people per night. Having that many homeless at the doorstep to the state's No. 1 tourist destination prompted complaints from residents and resulted in negative national publicity.

The issue simmered for months, until Mayor Mufi Hannemann launched "Ma-lama 'o Waikiki" on March 12 to address the situation. Now, park users and merchants say the effort has made a difference.

"The cleanup has gone really well," said Rick Egged, president of the Waikiki Improvement Association. "It's made a big difference in the appearance and the sanitation of the park. I am happy with what they're doing. I'm already hearing good comments, from residents and those who use the park on a regular basis, that things are much improved."

Kapi'olani Park is used daily by large numbers of walkers, runners, soccer players, youth sports participants, tennis players, archers and others.

"It will be nice to have the restrooms and other facilities spruced up," said Keith Johnson, a tennis player who voluntarily helps maintain the courts. "A lot of visitors use these courts. The homeless camps do detract from the courts and the community.

"I've been around here for many years, and it's tough to care for the park when it's so heavily used," he said.

KP will be closed from 12:00 AM to 5:00 AM

TONIGHT: Late Night Park Closures for Kapiolani Park

Mayor Mufi Hannemann today announced on April 8, 2009 that the City launched a new effort to clean and renovate public park grounds and facilities in Waikiki, including Kapiolani Park and the Diamond Head end of Kalakaua Avenue.

The final phase, starting today, involves late night park closures:

  • Areas of Kapiolani Park, mauka of Kalakaua Avenue, will be closed from midnight to 5 a.m. daily. This includes the tennis courts.
  • Areas makai of Kalakaua Avenue will be closed from 2 a.m. to 5 a.m.
  • The comfort station behind the Police sub-station will remain open until 2 a.m., four hours longer than before.

The Wongs from Wayne

Su Wong marries Lee Wong. The next year, the Wongs have a new baby.
The nurse brings over a lovely, healthy, bouncy, but definitely a Caucasian, WHITE baby boy.

'Congratulations,' says the nurse to the new parents. 'Well Mr. Wong, what will you and Mrs. Wong name the baby?'
The puzzled father looks at his new baby boy and says, 'Well, two Wong's don't make a white, so I think we will name him...
The answer is in the comment below.
Are you ready for this?

Lisicki

CHARLESTON, South Carolina (AFP) - German 16th seed Sabine Lisicki clinched her first career title on Sunday with her big serve, high-tempo game giving her a 6-2, 6-4 win over Danish fifth seed Caroline Wozniacki.

Lisicki had knocked out Venus Williams in the third round and the 19-year-old proved it was no fluke with a deserved victory in the one million dollar tournament over her 18-year-old opponent who had taken the Ponte Vedra Beach claycourt trophy last weekend.

Happy Birthday Koba-san

This flower is for your 60 years birthday celebration.

Happy Birthday Koba-san

He became 60 years old, yesterday. Congratulation!!
In Japan, 60th birthday is kind of special.
Ben, please give him another flower.

Aloha,

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BARBARA & BILL

Happy birthday, Bill and Barbara

Today is their birthday. Bill and Barbara have the same birthday.
I don't know how old they are. If they were born on the same day and year, they are twins? They do look alike.

In probability theory, the birthday problem, or birthday paradox[1] pertains to the probability that in a set of randomly chosen people some pair of them will have the same birthday. In a group of at least 23 randomly chosen people, there is more than 50% probability that some pair of them will both have been born on the same day. For 57 or more people, the probability is more than 99%, and it reaches 100% when the number of people reaches 367 (there are a maximum of 366 possible birthdays). The mathematics behind this problem leads to a well-known cryptographic attack called the birthday attack.
