Workers struggling to prevent more radiation from escaping Japan's crippled nuclear plant face a hellish scenario -- with every attempt to get it under control seemingly creating life-threatening problems. Unfortunately they are going to have to get used to it.
A final resolution of the nuclear disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi power station will likely take decades and experts say there could be many further setbacks and frightening moments to come. The cost in terms of money or the health of the workers is almost impossible to assess at this stage.

From Jake in Osaka, Japan

From Jake in Osaka, Japan
I appreciated the good memory of Hawaii over Yakiniku.
Peter said that on his flight most passengers were
returning Japanese and few were foreigners. And he was
surprised to observe at Narita that so many foreigners
were fleeing out of Japan. Those foreigners staying in
Japan make movement to western part. It is said that
the demolition of Fukushima nuclear power plants would
take several decades. After Three-Mile Island accident
strange flowers and plants came out. Fukushima is worse
than it. We cannot trust our Government announcement
that Fukushima is safe.  U.S.Government made similar
annoucement at Three-Mile Island accident.  None knows
what genetic aftermath might come out. We are worried
that to what extent this accident would get worse.

Hey all:  Here are my 1st day pics from sunny, warm Miami Beach...starts with a pic of the park between my hotel and the beach, my hotel is yellow, you'll see others painted in pastel colors along Ocean Drive, some surrounding scenes, birds at beach and in flight, Ocean Drive, temp guage showing 90 degrees before noon, a hotel named Shore Park..I took it because when Keri and Keli came to Waikiki they stayed in the Park Shore...sidewalk cafes line Ocean Drive, Hibiscus ( Hawaii State Flower in Miami), the beach...what an awesome beach, sandy bottom in the ocean, nice waves, warm water, lots of bikinis, and many of the pics I took while standing in the ocean up to my waist. The flags by the lifeguard mean its windy and there are some jelly fish present. Yikes, I should have checked that out before I went in the water. I saw lifeguards treating one girl who had been stung...ouch!!!  I take more pics as I walk around and send them in a few days.  Enjoy these pics because SNOW is forecast for WV...bummer.   Much aloha..

Charles News02

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama said Monday that students should take fewer standardized tests and school performance should be measured in other ways. Too much testing makes education boring for kids, he said.
"Too often what we have been doing is using these tests to punish students," the president told students and parents at a town hall hosted by the Univision Spanish-language television network at Bell Multicultural High School in Washington, D.C.
Obama, who is pushing a rewrite of the nation's education law that would ease some of its rigid measurement tools, said policymakers should find a test that "everybody agrees makes sense" and administer it in less pressure-packed atmospheres, potentially every few years instead of annually.
At the same time, Obama said, schools should be judged on criteria other than student test performance, including attendance rate.
"One thing I never want to see happen is schools that are just teaching the test because then you're not learning about the world, you're not learning about different cultures, you're not learning about science, you're not learning about math," the president said. "All you're learning about is how to fill out a little bubble on an exam and little tricks that you need to do in order to take a test and that's not going to make education interesting."
"And young people do well in stuff that they're interested in," Obama said. "They're not going to do as well if it's boring."
The president endorsed the occasional administering of standardized tests to determine a "baseline" of student ability. He said his daughters Sasha, 9, and Malia, 12, recently took a standardized test that didn't require advance preparation but was just used as a tool to diagnose their strengths and weaknesses, and areas where they could use more emphasis from teachers. The girls attend the private Sidwell Friends School in Washington.
Obama, who has been pushing his education agenda all month, has expressed concern that too many schools will be unable to meet annual proficiency standards under the No Child Left Behind law this year. The standards are aimed at getting 100 percent of students proficient in math, reading and science by 2014, a goal now widely seen as unrealistic.
The Obama administration has proposed replacing those standards with a loftier yet less prescriptive requirement that by 2020 all students graduating from high school should be ready for college or a career.
Obama wants Congress to send him a rewrite of the 2001 law before the start of a new school year this fall. Although his education secretary, Arne Duncan, has been working hard with lawmakers of both parties, the deadline may be unrealistic with Congress focused on the budget and the economy. Congressional Republicans also look unwilling to sign off on Obama's plans to increase spending on education.

Businesses in a number of industries are trying to adapt to a new reality. No longer can they count on reliable access to critical supplies, a fact prompting frantic phone calls, contingency planning and product redesigns.
For instance, film and television producers, along with the companies that support them, are scrambling to stock up on commercial-grade videotape. A major supplier, the Sony Corporation, closed its factories in JapanMany studios say they face no shortage now, but there is a fear of a shortage — and that is all it takes to put companies on edge.
“Folks everywhere know there will be a shortage and are buying as much as they can,” said Thomas Engdahl, chief executive of Advanced Digital Services, which archives Hollywood shows and is among the many companies frantically calling videotape distributors. “It’s creating panic buying.”
Short of parts, automakers including General Motors have slowed or stopped production at some plants. Other manufacturers like Nokia, the Finnish cellphone maker, have said they expect disruptions.
But even companies that have maintained relatively normal operations have had to hustle. In San Jose, Calif., just hours after the earthquake, employees of Echelon, which sells smart meters that monitor electricity consumption, held an emergency meeting to discuss the potential effect on their supply chain. Identifying every supplier from Japan was the top priority, said Russell Harris, Echelon’s senior vice president for operations.
Echelon and the contractor that builds its smart meters quickly came up with a list of 25 suppliers that were responsible for more than 50 components. Within a few days, they had contacted each one and found, to their relief, that none of those factories had been damaged.

Today is Kurt's wife Shirley's birthday.
