Kapiolani Park closure hours extended

Honolulu will close all sections of Kapiolani Regional Park beginning at midnight Monday.

The city’s Department of Parks and Recreation said the closures will run from midnight until 5 a.m.

Currently, the park section on the ocean side of Kalakaua Avenue from Kapahulu Avenue to the Waikiki Natatorium is closed from 2 a.m. to 5 a.m.

The city said the park hours are being changed “to reduce confusion, minimize signage, and ensure safety in the beach and inland areas.”

The new hours, however, will also affect a growing homeless population that has established itself in the park in recent years.

The presence of homeless people has upset many residents and visitors, and government officials have struggled to address the issue.

Kapiolani, a well-trafficked facility, is located near Waikiki and Diamond Head and includes within its grounds the Honolulu Zoo and the Waikiki Aquarium.

The Honolulu City Council is considering bills that would discourage the use of tents in city parks and would ban shopping carts in parks.
